A new opera based on Karen Blixen's book, with music by Gisle Kverndokk and libretto by Øystein Wiik, premiered in excerpt at two Washington, DC venues.
NYOS presented excerpts of "Babette's Feast," a new opera based on the celebrated novella by Karen Blixen, across two Washington, DC engagements in its 2024/2025 season: November 10, 2024, with the Denyce Graves Foundation at the National Gallery of Art, and November 12, 2024, at the Embassy of France's Villa Albertine, framed as a "Gastronomy & Movie" event pairing the music with the story's famous feast theme.
Music is by Gisle Kverndokk with libretto by Øystein Wiik — the same composer-librettist team behind "Letters from Ruth" and "Max und Moritz." Soprano Colleen Daly sang the premiere excerpts, going on to describe the engagement as a highlight of her season in her own artist bio. The production was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the Norwegian Embassy, and the Embassy of France.
